Lease terms typically have a limit on the miles you can drive. If you go over, you're assed a fix charge for any additional miles. That can add up to a very costly penalty when you turn in your car.
Not using the miles you pay for during the lease term is also a very good reason to keep your vehicle. The residual value has already been agreed on at the time you signed your lease. If your vehicle only has 20,000 miles and you've paid for 36,000 miles why give away that equity?
The dealership will charge you for excess miles but there's no refund for turning in a car with low miles and therefore a higher value.
